Cranberry Lake
Cranberry Lake Ski Trail, 1 mile west of Cranberry Lake on Rt. 3, 16 km of trails, free.
Five Ponds Wilderness Area, remote area, 40 miles of trails, starting in Wanakena, two miles south of NYS Hwy 3; in Wanakena cross one-lane bridge across Oswegatchie River. High Falls truck trail goes straight ahead; for Dead Creek Flow truck trail, turn left after crossing bridge, go one-half mile.
Peavine Swamp Ski Trail, State Highway 3, west of Cranberry Lake, main trail of 3.9 miles to lean-to at Inlet flow, two loops at either end of 3.4 and 1.2 miles each, and 2.1 mile loop in middle; 315/386-4000.
Dillabough State Forest
Off Russell-Pierrepont Rd., 7 km of trails, free.
Hannawa Falls
♥ Postwood Park and County Forest, 13 km of trails starting at parking lot, 1.6-mile loop and 4.1 mile loop, free.
Hopkinton
Fort Jackson Park, 315/386-4000.
Louisville
Swamper Dome, Louisville Arena. The trail is approximately 2 miles in length running from behind the Arena through the woods skirting a 90 acre meadow and back into the woods down along the Grasse River and back to the arena.
Wilson Hill Wildlife Management Area, from State Route 37, turn onto State Route 131 to Willard Road, turn north and follow the road, 1.6 miles of trails.
Massena
Robert Moses State Park [see page 16 in the Empire State Trails Northern Guide] in Massena, off Rt. 37, 3 miles north of Massena, 25 km of trails, free, ski rentals: $10 for whole day, $4 for 2 hours. Snowshoes available for loan. 315/764-5630.
